Atmosphere
Presentation:
Lizzy showed a video that has black spots of video and then a “dummy” image with sound that creates anticipation.
“I’ve discovered sound is power.”
“I like to create an atmosphere where the limits of perception are placed into question.”
Critique:
Timothy Druckrey: I am perplexed, either pick a sound or image? What you are creating is confusing. There have been experimental films since the 1920′s as well. There are just so many references that it is difficult to be specific as to what to recommend you. Sound and picture should support each other or else they defeat each other. You can’t just say that sound is more powerful than image.
Lizzy Brooks: I want to use sound picture at once.
Micah Walter: You have been trying to break into a time-based medium – you think it might be more powerful – but that is dangerous. You start defeating your own work. It feels like an add-on to your base work. You need an initial reason to start with, without that reason being “it is more powerful”.
Timothy Druckrey: It is clear you want to make an atmosphere. How to set the stage for your work.
William Pace: Remember Craig Kalpakjian created that one hallway piece to raise anxiety (“Corridor”).
Timothy Druckrey: Whatever those pictures are you need to figure out how to show them. This is what you will have to explore.
