Collection Series

September 14th, 2010

Nancy uses photography based on an unknown location and documented while doing field research. Before coming to MICA she created a series about collections. All her notes that she’s ever been given, all her school papers. She then focused on her interests on people and their interactions. Craigslist “anonymous” postings of lost/missed connections. The ephemerality of having this text physically shaped and interacted with which would destroy it. To make a direct relationship to the tactile world, created a cranking machine that would push Crisco through and distort the outline of the letters that make up the Craigslist listing to the point of making them unreadable.

Another possible concept for another machine idea would be using currency. The idea of adding money into a system hat gives the person a greater influence. Specifically in this case about Art funding. (The NEA being a case example and how this organization funds only certain projects.)
• The more you invest, the more control you have over the idea. Investment leads to power. Art having this characteristic.
• If its just about censorship, it becomes problematic. “Maplethorp” having public funds to endorse “porn” works created from public institutions. (Can the government control the non-profit institution?)
• Piece is about the subtle influences. Not about “no” or “yes”, it is too binary.
• Where is the populous limit?
• Philanthropy on the Artistic image.
Whitney Museum was actually funded by Philip-Morris who wished to have that institution fight against the N.Y. smoking ban.
Nancy wants to create a serious of devices that could give people the ability to nullify all electronic devices. A sense of choice.
