MFA Year 2 - Artist Talk
“Double Wide” Eli Walker 2011
Seen as a traditional painting in materials, but the background is coming from “Post-Modern” cutesy paintings and I am still working it out. The scale is important. How can anything be “Anti” anything when you make Art?
Question: “Why is the carved out space bigger than the painting itself if it was in the wall?
Eli Walker : The progession of the painting continues past the boundaries of the canvas. Then the painting continues in the gallery.
Question : “Who is the audience for this piece?”
Eli Walker : “Anyone else beyond the MICA community is the audience for the piece. Not to fully constricted within a museum context. Formal qualities and the fact that they are dumb, very simple. The painting starts with the structure itself. The color evokes painting values of CMYK and I fell in love with the color palette.”
Question : “What if they wanted to buy the painting? Would you include the breaking of the wall for example?”
Eli Walker : “It is okay if they just want the painting and not to have to include the wall’s destruction.”
