Turmoil & Serenity
November 22nd, 2009
Darren showed 2 videos entitled “Turmoil” and “Serenity”. Both videos of a palette knife running across a brown papered surface. Each are creating gestures based on music interpretation.
The palette knife to Darren becomes a tool of creation as the brush. Video as a tool of documentation of the movement created from listening to music. Artwork seems to refer/be like a bug flying towards the light. He then goes to talk about how he never knew his father; only knows of him from stories his mother told him. His father is an artist in calligraphy – but completely different people. He’s outgoing while Darren is very shy. (He showed a chart that shows his influences; but it seems that everything influences him.
Critique:
Timothy Druckrey: “Serenity” and “Turmoil” (there is no difference). Why do you not choose to make an image? If video is the processes of the work, why do you want to show the process? I like the video more than the paintings but frustrated that the conceptual meaning behind it doesn’t exist.
