Cyano-types

December 7th, 2009

Andy is working with tons of thrown out medial illustrations, masking out photos to just isolate gestures.

Critique:
Timothy Druckrey: “What interests you about these images?”

Craig Kalpakjian: Good spring board to something having to do with the imagery. Why cyanotypes and these medical images? Why on a cloth? Instructional images?

Darrell Appelzoller: Interested in the medical instruments and using printing process.

Lizzy Brooks: What’s the overall concept?

Darrell Appelzoller: To isolate the gestures from the illustrations and re-imagine them into a different image. Trying to figure out the purpose of the technique with these images.

“What’s the point of putting them in a new context?”

Timothy Druckrey: Trying to reconcile two unreconciled situations: 1) Cyanotypes are cool. 2) Using medical images and the decontextualization destroys their innate beauty. Since the beginning of civilization there have been analysis / images of the human body/form. Scientifically and artistically.
